My friend Peter, a member of the Knights of St Columba in Cardiff, had picked me up from my overnight accommodation and we journeyed by bus to Miskin outside Cardiff. Apart from the three people who had travelled with us on the Bus, the Church was empty when we arrived. We learnt a little later that the Parish Priest, Cannon Daly was unwell in Hospital. While I was waiting, I took some photos both inside and outside the church.
Servers began to arrive from different parishes and were directed to the adjacent Hall in order to change. Seventy-Five servers were expected for the Mass. Later Deacon Eddie Wyman, newly appointed Diocesan Director of the Guild for the Archdiocese of Cardiff arrived, and I was able to clarify with him that it was the intention to take a Group Photo after the Mass. Just before the start of Mass, we were asked to line up in two's, and together with both Priests and Deacons were directed via the covered walkway to the rear of the Church, where we were joined by Archbishop Peter's Procession.
Archbishop Peter welcomed all the Servers present, and stated that this was the first Servers Mass to be held in the Archdiocese, since the appointment of the new Diocesan Director. The hymns and readings were translated into sign language for the Deaf. Our Westminster Director Father Keith Stoakes also used Sign Language.
The Archbishop's Sermon concerned the very important place that servers played in the Liturgy; at the end of which he wished all those present every success in their duties as Servers.
At Communion, I received "The Body of Christ" from Archbishop Peter, and before the Final Blessing and Hymn, he announced the Presentation of Three Guild Medals. Two servers came up and received their 10 Year Silver Medal, and Chris Moore, M.C. at Belmont Abbey in Herefordshire, received his Silver Medal of Merit for 20 Years Service on the Altar. During the Final Hymn, we returned to the Hall for refreshments, but were called back to the Church for a Group Photo with Archbishop Peter. After the Group Photo, which Deacon Robert Coyne very kindly took on my behalf. He also took some further photos of Archbishop Peter talking to the representatives of the Central Council. These were Father Keith Stoakes, Michael Chute, Michael O'Leary, Tony Hawes and myself, Tony Aldridge.
I was given a lift back to Cardiff, and later that day caught an early evening train back to London.
